I Took The First Step Towards My Sisterlock Journey – Week 12 (7/9/08)

Posted in Week 12 on July 9, 2008 by KeAndri

Greetings! I am now in Week 12 of my natural hair journey. However, today, I took the first step towards my Sisterlock journey. I was referred and given a name and phone number of a Sisterlock Trainee by Theresa, a woman I met in the LockItUp group. She gave me several people to contact for Sisterlocks. I called the first person on my list (a Certified Sisterlock Consultant) yesterday, left a message, but I have not heard back from the person. So, I continued on down my list and the Sisterlock Trainee was next in line of people to call. When I initially called, no one answered so I left a message. In less than 30 minutes, I received a call back (she gets a PLUS for that). The Sisterlock Trainee was such a nice person to talk to over the phone. She was very personable, knowledgeable, and provided a wealth of information concerning her experience with Sisterlocks, Sisterlocks in general, and the process of obtaining and maintaining Sisterlocks. First impressions are DEFINITELY lasting ones to me…and she made a GOOD first impression. I was impressed!!! I explained to her that I had kinky twist braids in my hair and would be taking them down July 27th. We decided to make my initial consultation with her for July 30th. Now…you know I’m anxious…LOL…especially if you’ve been checking in and monitoring my progress. I’m ALWAYS ranting about getting my Sisterlocks. Well…I just wanted everyone to know that I’ve taken the first step towards this journey. I’m SO excited!!!

Above…is a picture of an up-do style with a kinky twist…that’s what I like to call it. Looks rather cute…if you ask me. Here are a couple of pictures of my new growth:

The back of my hair near the nape/neck area had been tapered and shaved. When my hair was braided, it was too short to braid. It has since grown out and look at it now…check out the pic below:

Well…it looks like I’m on my way and gradually moving towards having my Sisterlocks soon. I’m now anxiously awaiting my initial consultation on July 30th!!!

It is now Week 10 into my journey. I just finished washing my hair and I notice that the braids are REALLY doing what I need them to…and that is…make my hair grow! I oiled my scalp and pulled some of the braids off my face. Here are some pics:

Well…I’m starting to see some new growth which is good! I continue to wash my hair every other week and oil my scalp with 100% natural coconut oil. GROW, GROW, GROW!!!

The Day Before Mother’s Day (5/10/08)

Hi all! Well…it’s a day before Mother’s Day and a week since getting these kinky twist braids. I like them and have received several compliments. I hope my Sisterlocks draw compliments from people also…but I have no worries that they will. I’ve joined an online group, LockItUp, and I’ve met others with Sisterlocks. There are some women on there with beautiful Sisterlocks. I can’t wait to join the Sisterlock family!!! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL MOTHERS!!!

Second Transition Hairstyle – Kinky Twist Braids (5/3/08)

Posted in Week 02 on May 3, 2008 by KeAndri

Hi everyone! Ok…my patience has started to diminish…I WANT MY SISTERLOCKS!!! I need to grow out at least 1 1/2 to 2 inches of new growth before I can have Sisterlocks installed. Soooo…I decided that the only way to make progress, and FAST, was to get braids. I wanted something as close to wearing locks as possible, so I chose to get these kinky twist braids. I like them!!! I called up Machy African Hair Braiding Salon in Calumet City, Illinois and was able to get an appointment today. These braids should give my hair a break and allow it to grow. I’m going to keep them in as long as I can. Hopefully, once they’re ready to come out, I can immediately get ready for my Sisterlocks!

My First Attempt At A Transition Hairstyle (4/26/08)

Posted in Week 01 on April 26, 2008 by KeAndri

Ok…so yesterday I announced the “official” start day of my journey. Well, after the big announcement, I gave my hair a ‘no poo’ wash. The term “no poo” means to NOT use shampoo. Chemicals in some shampoos can irritate and dry out your scalp and hair, especially African American hair. I opted for a ‘no poo’ wash using a hair conditioner and oiled my scalp with 100% natural coconut oil. Ahhh…a freshly cleaned head of hair!!!

Afterwards, I gazed into the mirror at myself and wondered how would I style my hair. I made the big decision to go natural yesterday, but I had no clue as to how I would style my hair. After much needed research on the internet, I decided to go with a straw/rod set combo to style my hair. I prayed that it would work…and from what I see…it did!!! I love it…and so does my husband and son!!!
